Academic Registrar's Department

Role

The department ensures total quality management of academic activities. It delivers effective and efficient services for high academic standards. The Academic Registrar is the chief coordinator of all matters pertaining to the academic organisation of the Institute: Admissions & Records, Registration; Teaching processes; Practicum Attachments; Examinations; Transcript & Certificates; Research & Grants; Curriculum/Syllabuses; Staff/ Capacity Development; Staff Welfare; Graduation Ceremonies and Gender Mainstreaming. The Academic Registrar is always the Secretary to Academic Board.

School of Nursing

Given the acute shortage of medical personnel both in the private and public health units and the massive future requirements as observed hereafter, MMH desired to join government in the quest to train health workers.
In November 2008 MTI was born by enrolling the first set of students for both Diploma in Nursing (DN) and Certificate in Comprehensive Nursing (CCN). The Ministry of Education and Sports (MOES) licensed MTI in 2016 to train Certificate in Nursing (CN) and Certificate in Midwifery (CM) and examined by UNMEB Training in CN and CM therefore started in May 2011.The DNE and DME courses started in July 2019. Student enrollment has grown tremendously by 60% per year since inception.

Medical Laboratory


Background:

It was established in 2010 and has now passed out two groups of Medical Laboratory Assistants. It is registered with the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES): Centre Number: UAHEB/041 for certificate and UAHEB/070 for Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology
Academic Programs:
Certificate in Medical Laboratory Techniques (CLT)
Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT).
Staffing:
The school is appropriately staffed with highly qualified and experienced professional trainers. The Tutor: Student ratio is 1:5. The minimum qualification of staff being bachelors level.
Student Intake: Student recruitment is done once a year normally between months of June and August. The students must meet the MoES minimum criteria.
Cooperate affiliations
The school as close working relationship with Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), Uganda Blood Transfusion Science, Ministry of Health, Allied Health Professionals Council, Mayanja Memorial Hospital (MMH), Mayanja Memorial Hospital Foundation, Buluba Leprosy Centre, Mbarara Laboratory Diagnostic Centre, Mulago Hosptal, e.t.c
Examining and Academic Performance:
Students sit every semester national examinations offered by Uganda Allied Health Examination Board (UAHEB) Examination center UAHEB/041 for certificate and UAHEB/070 for Diploma. It is the same board that offers the academic documents. The school performance rivals that of Private Not for Profit Schools.
Student Bodies: Students have an association namely: Mayanja Memorial Medical Laboratory Students Association. This association organises seminars and study tours. It also links the laboratory students to other students in other institutions like Mbarara University Medical Laboratory Students with whom they have a working relationship.
Training Facilities: The school offers attractive training facilities namely training laboratories, Teaching Hospital, and the school has a memorandum of understanding with Mbarara University. The Medical Laboratory School is located in an institute offering other programs like , Nursing and Midwifery. This offers a challenging training environment and specifically mimics the future working conditions.


Clinical Medicine and Community Health

The Burden of health care delivery in rural Uganda falls majorly to Clinical Officers as the first health workers to give emergency treatment yet 87% of the population is rural.Clinical Medicine and Community Health is still very much needed especially in south western Uganda.Without increasing funding and training Clinical Officers,the 5586 Patients to one Clinical Officers will worsen as the population continues to increase.MTI started training Clinical Officers in 2012 and the numbers has drastically increased despite shortage of funding. Requirements 1. 1 Principle pass in Biology and any subsidiary at A Level 2. Certificate in any Medical Course from a recognized Institution. Examined by UAHEB Examination center number is UAHEB/071.
